Desalination plants are running 24/7 all the year round producing 1.5 million cubic meters of water every month, the need is almost 8 million. They are powered by fossil fuel and the production uses a lot of energy. The outlet from the plant is twice as salty as the sea and its effect on sea life isn't fully understood. ?[But] it is our only hope,? says Kyriacos Kyrou senior water engineer at the Cyprus water development department. ?It is not an option, it is the only option.?
